At Kipinä Kids Surabaya, purposeful learning is always at the heart of every activity. This week, our preschoolers discovered the joy of menganyam—the traditional Indonesian art of weaving—through a creative project called Fish-Scale Weaving. With small strips of colorful paper in hand, the children practiced weaving them together to create patterns that look like the shiny scales of a fish.
For young learners, weaving may look like a simple craft, but it is much more than that. It is a fun, hands-on way to develop important early childhood skills. By weaving one strip over another, children are not only creating art but also strengthening fine motor skills, which are essential for writing, cutting, and self-care activities. The action of weaving helps build hand-eye coordination, patience, and focus, as they carefully place each piece in the right position.
This activity also gives children an opportunity to practice problem-solving. They learn to figure out how the strips should go—over, under, over, under—to create the desired effect. At the same time, weaving fosters creativity and a sense of achievement. The joy on their faces when they see their fish-scale patterns completed shows how proud they feel of their own work.
At Kipinä, we believe in blending traditional culture with modern teaching methods. By introducing menganyam in a playful and age-appropriate way, children not only experience Indonesian heritage but also develop global skills such as concentration, perseverance, and artistic expression.
Parents are often amazed at how such activities build readiness for school and life. As the children’s fingers busily weave colorful scales, they are also weaving together the foundations for learning, confidence, and independence.
At Kipinä Kids Surabaya, every small activity is designed with a bigger purpose: to nurture curious, capable, and creative learners who are ready to shine. 🌟
